I share my passion for art through designing courses, kits, and teaching classes that assist students in fulfilling their artistic dreams. Introduction to Coloured Pencil

This course allows students to explore the possibilities of coloured pencils. Students learn about the differences between pencil brands and paper surfaces. The course covers techniques in applying, mixing and lifting colour as well as burnishing and impressing lines. In addition to theory and exercises, students gain practical experience by working on projects (line drawings are provided). Come learn in a fun, supportive environment.

Dates: Saturday mornings: June 7th, 14th, 21st, 2008, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Course Fee: The course fee is $125.00. Price includes snacks and beverages. Step by step instructions, pictures and line drawings for the projects are printed off and given to students. This enables students to complete projects if they do not finish in class or they can redo them at their own convenience.

Materials Fee: $10.00. This fee covers the cost of the print making paper and other materials that are provided by the instructor. Students are asked to bring supplies such as masking tape, scissors, ruler, etc. Students also bring their own coloured pencils. Upon registration, a complete supplies list is provided as well as advise on the pencils to purchase.

Beyond the Basics

This course has been designed to take students beyond the basics covered in Introduction to Coloured Pencil. Students will learn how to work more effectively with colour. Learning how to create colour harmony in a painting will enable students to take their art to a new level. Students will practice how to see colour and will gain a greater understanding of how to use coloured pencils to create the colours they desire. Students will learn how to use complementary colours to create colours with coloured pencils that cannot be created with paint. Creating value studies, underpaintings, and various basics of composition shall also be covered. The focus of this workshop is to provide students with a variety of information that can be applied to improve their artwork. There will be fun, easy exercises that will give students greater knowledge and confidence in these areas.

Drawing Basics

This comprehensive drawing course is an opportunity for participants to learn the basics of drawing. This course is designed for the person who wishes they could draw but feels they cannot. No previous drawing experience or drawing skills are required. If you think you can only draw stick figures, this course is for you. Anyone can learn to draw! Come and learn in a fun supportive environment.

Dates: Monday evenings, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Starting September 8th and running until October 27th, 2008 (Seven evenings in total. Please note that there will be no class on Thanksgiving Monday October 13th.)

Course Fee: $150.00. Fee includes beverages and snacks.

Mixed Media 'Tapestry' Workshop

This workshop is all about fun and instant gratification. Typically coloured pencil artists work slowly, paying great attention to detail. Not in this workshop! Students will work with gesso, paint and coloured pencils to complete a mixed media 'tapestry' painting in just a few hours. This workshop will encourage students to enjoy exploring the use of other media with their coloured pencils. Please note that you do not need to have experience as a painter. The steps are very simple to follow. You do not need experience as a coloured pencil artist either.

Date: Saturday September 20th, 2008, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Workshop Fee: $65.00. Fee includes all materials - support to work on, gesso and fluid acrylics. Also, lunch shall be provided. (Hopefully the weather will allow us to eat in the garden.) Please note students are to bring their own coloured pencils.

Portraits in Coloured Pencil

This course will cover many aspects of portraiture. Emphasis will be on capturing a likeness by accurately drawing and colouring the various elements of a face. Students will practice by working on enlarged examples of facial features such as eyes, nose and mouth. Line drawings will be provided. Students will receive instruction and practice in creating skin tones with coloured pencils. Other areas such as how to pose a subject, how to handle backgrounds, how to successfully work from photographs, how to deal with wrinkles, freckles and eye glasses will all be discussed.

Dates: Saturday mornings, (9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) November 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd.

Workshop Fee: $150.00. Fee includes beverages and snacks. Paper will also be supplied. Students are to bring their own coloured pencils.

Open Studio

This single day workshop will be an opportunity for participants to bring in work of their own. Students may also wish to purchase a practice kit to work on (click here to view). Come create, in a fun supportive environment. This day is open to artists of all levels of ability. Individual assistance will be given, so bring your questions and your problems. Receive help with a current work, or start a fresh piece. Perhaps you would like help reworking something. The choice is yours. This day is all about you and your creative spirit! Why not come out for a day of laughter, art and good food? The candles will be lit and the music ready.

Date: To be announced. Saturday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, approximately. (Arrive later and leave earlier if you wish.) If you are interested in attending an open studio, please contact Teresa.

Workshop Fee: $50.00. Fee includes lunch and beverages. Paper will also be supplied if required.

Registration Information

To register, please contact Teresa and state which course you are interested in. She will reply with a mailing address. Students then mail payment of the course fee. Once payment is received, you will be officially registered. Post-dated cheques or money orders are welcome. Cheques are not cashed until the course has been held. Please make cheques payable to Teresa Mallen.

Once payment is received, you will be mailed a registration receipt. If applicable, a supplies list will be included. A map and detailed directions to Teresa's home will also be provided.

Please note that class sizes are limited. To avoid disappointment, please register early.

 

Coming soon: On-line courses

Teresa is currently developing course material specifically designed for instruction via the internet. This format will suit students who choose to work independently at their own pace or who are unable to attend classes due to course location or because of scheduling conflicts. The first on-line course shall be available in 2008.

 

Other Options For Instruction

If you belong to an arts group and are interested in having Teresa conduct a coloured pencil workshop please contact her to discuss details. It is also possible to hold workshops in a student's home. If you are located in the Ottawa area and you are able to organize some friends who would like to take a course, please contact Teresa.

Should you be interested in individual instruction, Teresa is also available on an hourly basis. Perhaps you have tried coloured pencil and there is something you would like help with or perhaps you would like a critique of your work. If you are in the Ottawa area, contact Teresa to arrange a personal consultation. If you are not in the Ottawa area, a consultation can take place via the internet.
