Artist’s Statement

I love art - all media, styles and sizes. For many years I explored various media and I tried to find my style. I was frustrated with the mediums themselves and the end results. In a round about fashion, discovering who I was not and accepting who I was, lead me to the art I do today.

What I learned to embrace and celebrate about myself is now reflected in my art. I am a detail oriented person and I like precision, organization and control. I love line, form and colour. I express this by working in a realistic style, including lots of detail. Within the boundaries of realism, I express myself by going beyond what I see. I might choose to embellish a subject by changing colour or enhancing aspects of form. The end result is my interpretation of what I observe. I choose to work with professional grade coloured pencils because it is a medium that allows me to work with great control. Lines, contours and colour go where you place them. The unique colour mixing one can do with coloured pencils never ceases to delight me. What a wonderful combination of drawing and painting.

I am in awe of the wealth of beauty that surrounds us. I hope my work will inspire others to really observe what they see around them - to really see the nuances of colour in an object, to appreciate shape, light and shadow. We experience life’s richness when we start to appreciate the exquisite beauty in the simple and seemingly ordinary objects in our lives. Whether it is noticing the way the morning light turns the red tomatoes on the kitchen counter to a golden yellow orange or whether it is noticing the pattern on the cap of an acorn, we give ourselves the gift of living a deeper life when we pay attention.
